چکیده

Mechanistic representations of biogeochemical processes in ecosystem models are rapidly advancing, requiring advancements model evaluation approaches. Here we quantify multiple aspects functional performance to evaluate improved process models. We compare semi-empirical stomatal with hydraulic constraints against more mechanistic and functioning at a semi-arid pine site using suite metrics analytical tools. find that generally perform similarly under unstressed conditions, but diverges atmospheric soil drought. The empirical better capture synergistic information flows between water potential vapor pressure deficit transpiration, while the overly deterministic. Although can be parameterized yield similar performance, alternate parameterizations could not overcome structural underestimate unique contained about transpiration. Additionally, both multilayer canopy big-leaf were unable magnitude temperature divergence from air temperature, demonstrate errors leaf propagate considerable error simulated This study demonstrates value merging underutilized observational data streams emerging tools characterize function discriminate among representations.

Controls on transpiration in a semiarid riparian cottonwood forest

Cottonwood (Populus spp.) forests are conspicuous and functionally important elements of riparian vegetation throughout much of the western U.S. Understanding how transpiration by this vegetation type responds to environmental forcing is important for determining the water balance dynamics of riparian ecosystems threatened by groundwater depletion. Transpiration was measured in semiarid riparia...

Multiaged Silviculture of Ponderosa Pine

Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa P. & C. Lawson) is highly suitable for management using multiaged systems. This suitability is primarily the result of a frequent, low severity disturbance regime, but also because it naturally occurs at low densities and has a long history of management to promote multiple age classes. Several different stocking control tools are available for ponderosa pine inc...

Plant physiological influences on the fluxes of oxygenated volatile organic compounds from ponderosa pine trees

[1] Fluxes of oxygenated volatile organic compounds were measured above a ponderosa pine plantation, adjacent to the Blodgett Forest Research Station (38 53042.900N, 120 37057.900W, 1315 m elevation), with a fully automated relaxed eddy accumulation system coupled to a dual gas chromatograph-flame ionization detector (GC-FID) system. These measurements were initially reported by Schade and Gold...

Effects of thinning, prescribed burning, and burning season on the physiological performance of ponderosa pine

Low elevation ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex. Laws.) forests of the northern Rocky Mountains historically experienced frequent, low intensity fires that maintained open, uneven-aged stands. A century of fire suppression has led to denser ponderosa pine forests with higher competition for resources, higher tree stress, and greater risk of insect attack and stand destroying fire. Activ...
